The Kingswood Weaving Studio is accessible through the door on the right under the portico at the west end of the circle drive. This door is opposite the Green Lobby. Enter the studio through the wooden doors.
During school hours, visitors must first check in with the Dean's office (on the left side of the Green Lobby).
Sometimes the creaking of the famous Cranbrook Loom is all that can be heard in the weaving studio, though students, bent over their looms in deep concentration, are on orchestration of movement and animation. It is a difficult skill to master, but after only months, tapestries begin to emerge, each as unique and interesting as its creator.
Weaving was an important part of the building and decoration of all of Cranbrook’s campuses, especially Kingswood. Most of the original draperies, rugs, and tapestries were hand-woven on the Cranbrook looms. Today, the Weaving Studio is as active as it once was. Courses in weaving are offered to all upper school students, many of whom perfect their skills after school and into the night. The studio also welcomes a host of visitors, from lower school classes curious to learn about the art to weavers from all over the world who want a first-hand glimpse at one of North America’s largest and most impressive weaving studios.
