    1. Green Lobby

The Green Lobby is accessible at the west end of the circle drive in the front of the building. Enter via the doors on your left under the portico.

During school hours, visitors must first check in with the Dean's office. Upon entering the Green Lobby, the Dean's office is the first window on the left.

Anyone who visits Kingswood passes through the lustrous Green Lobby, a gathering place and one of the most remarkable Kingswood features. Located just off the main portico entrance, the Green Lobby is home to the offices of the Dean of Upper School Girls and the Director of Schools. The stairway off the lobby leads up to the Admission Office.

Named for the hand-crafted green tiles fired by Mary Chase Perry Sutton in the kilns of Detroit’s historic Pewabic Pottery, the Green Lobby is illuminated by leaded glass windows and large doors, one of which leads out into the Alumnae Courtyard. The wainscot is paneled in the same Pewabic tile as the floor, and the ceiling is painted with complementary silver and green decorations, the work of the architect’s daughter, Pipsan Saarinen Swanson. Decorating Kingswood was in fact a Saarinen family affair, as Loja, Eliel’s wife, designed the woven rug in the middle of the lobby, and their son Eero designed the benches.
