The Carnegie Library, situated between the current Penrose Library on the north and Mary Reed Building on the south, was the last of the 108 academic libraries personally funded by railroad tycoon Andrew S. Carnegie. Over the years, the Carnegie Library was modified numerous times for use as a student union, cafeteria, placement center and bookstore. By 1990 it was the only remaining classically designed building on campus. It was torn down that year after decades of deferred maintenance left it too dilapidated to renovate.
