In 1925, The Stadium, also known as “Hilltop Stadium,” was one of the first structures built north of Evans Avenue. The stadium was heavily promoted by William Seward Iliff (a team member in 1884) and partially funded by John Evans Jr., son of the university’s founder. The stadium was built for $751,000 and had a seating capacity of 26,000, making it the perfect location to hold commencement ceremonies as well as athletic events. In 1926, the football team played the official dedication game at DU Stadium and defeated Colorado School of Mines, 27-7. The stadium was demolished in 1971.
