Historic Thompson Oval is named after Paul “Admiral” Thompson, a former athletic director of Cranbrook School. A running track encircles the football field, which is bordered by stadium seating that seems to rise up from the hillside. During athletic games and events, clusters of people dot the many vantage points around the oval, and the cheers of fans echo over the grassy field. Overlooking Thompson Oval is a bronze sculptural relief of scrimmaging football players modeled on the school’s first team. This artistic representation, along with the bronze sculptures outside Lerchen Hall, bring the Cranbrook traditions of excellence in the arts and athletics together.
