The bronze cardinal statue was placed at the northeast side of Benson Stadium, facing the campus, so that it overlooks the main campus. It was placed on July 1, 2013, the same day UIW officially joined the Southland Conference and the ranks of Division I athletics. The football team rubs the beak of the cardinal statue for luck as they enter the stadium on game days.
