    1. Philip Savage House

Philip Savage House contains the Head of School’s Office, and administrators offices, the Alumni Offices, and the Common Room for our boarders.

One of the original buildings comprising the Quad, Philip Savage House  was named for the son of Minot Savage. Philip, a promising young poet and scholar of Whitman and Thoreau, died young, and the building was named in his honor as a tribute to him and his father. As school historian Walter Schneller wrote, Philip Savage House’s “unique entrance portal, remembered by all who come to the school, announces: ENTER HERE TO BE AND FIND A FRIEND.”  While the origin of the phrase is unknown, it seems likely to have been inspired by Emerson’s words: “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”
