John’s gargoyle overlooks Akin Common from Saperstein Hall. There is a Roman laurel leaf around the head of our former Head of the Classics Departments, thanks to a suggestion by former Headmaster Walter C. Johnson. John McAuliffe's bas relief bears a Latin phrase on the background which translates as "Either Learn or Leave!" On the front pedestal the Latin words translate to Excellence | Justice | Honor.
