Walter’s gargoyle overlooks the stairs leading from the courtyard to Akin Common. The gargoyle sculptures were intended to be both personal and whimsical. The original Walter Schneller design, for instance, had the historian/writer wearing glasses and holding a pen. The final design, however, shows him wearing Ben Franklin glasses and holding a feather quill, a nod to his stature as our ever timeless historian and author of Where the Seasons Tell Their Story: Hackley School’s First 100 Years..
