The Arts Quad geothermal field is made up of 84 bores, and supplies heating and cooling to Saisselin Art Building, Filene Hall, Zankel Music Center, and is prepared to support Bernhard Theatre.
This is one of three district fields at Skidmore College. A district field is one that supplies heating and cooling energy to multiple buildings. By designing a district field, Skidmore limited the total number of bores required to support these buildings, reducing construction costs, infrastructure, and operational cost.
Buildings within the Arts Quad district can also exchange energy with each other. If one building needs to be heated while another needs to be cooled, the buildings can transfer their energy rather than relying on the energy stored in underground. The ability to exchange heating and cooling loads increases the efficiency of the system and decreases the demand on the geothermal field.
