        Ceramic tiles, 2000

This monumental tile mural, located on the back wall of the El Pomar Natatorium, was designed and installed by the artist in 2000. While other artworks on campus depict athletic pursuits in a more traditional manner, here Tischler has instead chosen to symbolically portray the demanding sport with dynamic, flowing representations of surging ocean waves. Tischler cleverly transforms high-fired ceramic tile, a durable and static medium, into an energetic and powerful composition of wind and wave.

Maynard Tischler (b. 1932) received his graduate and undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, where he studied Art Education, Painting, and Interior Design. In the 1960s he returned to school at Alfred University, and earned his second masters degree, this time in Ceramics. In 1966, Tischler took a job at the University of Denver.
