    1. Butler Music Center

Named for the composer of Mansfield's Alma Mater, the Will George Butler Center opened in 1969 to meet the special needs of the Music Department. Butler features 55 practice rooms, two large rehearsal rooms, three classrooms, a 16-station Music Mac Lab, 16-station class piano lab, 19 faculty teaching studios, and a state-of-the-art recording studio.

The Music Department holds an ample supply of instruments available for student use. Instrumental and choral ensemble libraries are well-stocked with music collected for well over a century.

Most indoor musical performances are held in a 550-seat theatre, which is named for Mrs. Grace Steadman, long-time chair of the music department. The marching band, meanwhile, rehearses on a field named for John Myers, long-time director of that band.

State-of-the-art music technology facilities are available to all students at Mansfield, regardless of their major. Students can record, edit, transform, mix, and master their own music using industry-standard professional tools.

A 16-workstation music lab provides access to software and hardware for music production, editing, mixing, notation, and more. The HD recording studio features a 24-input Pro Tools HD system with a fully automated mixing console.

      Music Lab

The music lab is the main classroom for courses in music technology at Mansfield. Individual workstations give students hands-on opportunities in class and a place to work on projects during open lab hours. Each iMac workstation features a rich set of professional software for audio recording and editing, effects processing, synthesis, MIDI sequencing, music notation & arranging, and multimedia.

    2. Steadman Theatre

Steadman Theatre, named for long-time chair of the Music Department Mrs. Grace Steadman, is a recital hall seating 500 with outstanding acoustics, a large stage, and a variety of staging and lighting opportunities. Opened in 1969, Steadman is used for music department, university, and community events.

State-of-the-art music technology facilities are available to all students at Mansfield, regardless of their major. Students can record, edit, transform, mix, and master their own music using industry-standard professional tools.

      Recording Studio (Steadman Studios)

The recording studio, overlooking Steadman Theatre, is a professional-grade 24-input Pro Tools HD/Mac Pro system with a fully automated ICON console and monitoring system. The HD studio is connected to the Steadman Theatre stage by audio tie lines with input channels for up to 24 microphones and additional lines for talk-back communication. This room is the ideal place to record special projects, such as large ensemble albums, complex live events, audition tapes, and complex multi-track productions. A professional set of microphones is available for student recording projects (AKG, Neumann, Mojave, Earthworks, Beyerdynamic, Shure, etc).

Steadman Theatre also features a smaller satellite recording room, directly off stage. This room is set up for simple stereo recording of concerts, recitals, and other events. Student stage crews operate this system for most events, using either the dedicated 2-channel CD recorder or a Mac mini/Pro Tools system.

      Steadman Studios Live Room

The live room, adjacent to the HD control room, adds a fully sound-isolated rehearsal and recording room to the facilities at Butler Music Center and Steadman Theatre. The space features sound-isolating sliding glass doors (come observe a recording session in progress without getting in the way!), dedicated cooling system, floating walls, floors and ceiling for maximum sound isolation, and audio inputs to the HD control room.

    3. Straughn Auditorium

Straughn Hall is named for William Ringgold Straughn, who holds the distinction of being the last principal of Mansfield Normal School and the first president of Mansfield State Teachers College. Built in 1931 and completely renovated in 2016, Straughn Hall is the 2nd oldest building on campus and has a rich artistic, academic and social history in the life of Mansfield University.  The hall currently serves as the performance space for campus musical theatre and opera performances.  It also is a center for a variety of campus events including convocation, guest speakers, concerts, and ceremonies, and is a favorite rental space for local arts groups and businesses.

The auditorium features a classic and beautifully restored art deco-inspired design.  It has 725 seats on the main floor and 225 in the balcony.  The building has a full scenery workshop, dressing rooms, a pit orchestra, make-up room, and state of the art theatrical technology.
