Energy Storage System
USD has partnered with Stem, Inc. to provide a smart energy storage system for the campus in the form of a 528 kW lithium ion Tesla battery. The system became fully operational at USD at the end of December 2019. It stores electricity during times of low demand, and releases it for periods of high use, particularly during peak times when electricity charges are much higher. This is referred to as "peak shaving," and is projected to help USD save more than $1 million over 10 years!
