    1. CV Starr Hall / Labyrinth

The Hofstra Labyrinth is adapted from the world renown labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral, France, circa 1200 of the Common Era. By tradition, labyrinths are considered symbols of spiritual and intellectual enlightenment, paths walked from periphery to center as metaphors for the journeys in life from sickness to health, despair to promise, ignorance to knowledge. Visitors walked the labyrinth as a token of their pilgrimage obligations during the period of the Crusades of the Middle Ages.

Visitors to the Hofstra Labyrinth are encouraged to walk its path slowly, which will take them always to the center roseate pattern. Walking the path requires a focus of self in time and space and provides an opportunity for personal freedom from the distractions of daily life. Standing quietly in the center's rose represents a victory at the end of a journey, a passage meaningfully taken by many over the centuries.
