Three copper beeches surround the labyrinth. Copper beech trees are a cultivar of the common European beech trees that were listed in the catalogue of the Linnean Botanic Garden in Flushing, Long Island in 1790. They arrived in Newport during the Gilded Age. The North American forests were once connected to the Northern European forests. Wealthy 19th century Americans symbolically reconnected the two continental forests that were divided by platonic splits. The density of trees in this area is reminiscent of the dark beech forests of Europe.
