The London planetree is a cross between the Oriental plan and the American plane. Because it grows in very harsh conditions, it has become a highly planted tree in cities such as Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Chicago.
The unusual form that this London planetree has taken is probably a result of exposure to the coastal winds that once swept the deforested properties of Newport.
