Kappa Kappa Gamma, one of the oldest national women’s fraternities (aka sororities), was founded on October 13, 1870 at Monmouth College. On that day six women marched into the Chapel wearing keys in their hair with the letters KKG pronouncing themselves as a new women's fraternity. Since Monmouth College is the first chapter, the chapter name is Alpha.

The Stewart House was the home of Mary "Minnie" Stewart, one of Kappa's six founders. Minnie was the first President of Kappa and also its first Grand President. Many early meetings were held at the home. The Constitution was written here and the Charter was also signed here.

In 1989 The Stewart House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its significance as the founding home of one of the earliest women's fraternities and its importance in the progression of the women's movement.
