      1. Stream Daylighting

In 2013, the Village of New Paltz learned that a stream buried underneath the sidewalk along Hasbrouck Avenue was in need of repair. The Village assessed two different strategies: repairing the underground piping underneath the sidewalk or returning the stream to the surface that had been artificially enclosed during a past development project. The Village found that the stream daylighting strategy was not only more environmentally friendly, but also more cost effective than repairing the sidewalk and underground piping. This stream daylighting project improves water quality and transformed a grass hill into a vibrant public space.
