Nancy Chism was a professor of higher education and student affairs for the IU School of Education at IUPUI (1999 - 2012), Associate Vice-Chancellor for Professional Development (1999 - 2006), Associate Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (2004 - 2006), and Associate Dean of the Faculties (1999- 2006)
Chism took a leave of absence, in 2008, from IUPUI to spend five months in Thailand as a Fulbright Scholar consulting with the Thai Commission on Higher Education on issues of professional and organizational development for colleges and universities.
