A burying ground, thought to have been the first cemetery in what is now Indianapolis, was established near this site in 1821. It has historically been referred to as the “Plague Cemetery” as the first interments were individuals who died during an epidemic (possibly malaria) that swept through the area. The sister-in-law of David Maxwell, M.D., one of the founding members and chairman of the trustees of Indiana University, was among those buried here. Dr. Allison Maxwell, the granddaughter of Dr. David Maxwell, was the first Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The plaque was placed on the unmarked boulder in 2005.
