The memorial was placed in recognition of Dr. Louis Y. Mazzini's (June 3, 1894 - Jun 23, 1973) work as a serologist, researcher, and humanitarian.
Dr. Mazzini is best known for developing the "Mazzini Test", which was used to detect early, latent, and congenital syphilis and accurately detect false positive results. His test surpassed all others, won international honors, and was used throughout the world.
