A historical marker was placed in recognition of the changing landscape of, what is now, IUPUI's campus.

What started as a swampy forest in the 1820's grew with industry after the development of railroad lines in the mid 1800's. Soon after, communities began to emerge with predominantly immigrant and African American individuals and families settling into homes, churches, and small businesses. In 1911, Indiana University slowly began buying and developing the area into the IUPUI campus of today.
