A historical marker was placed to mark the original track of the Fall Creek Mill Race.

In the early days of Indianapolis settlement, water was an important source of energy. The original path of Fall Creek ran south through the center of IUPUI campus; the banks of which became a springboard for local economic development. To create a more powerful and efficient use of this energy source, settlers created a mill race—a current of water that is used to turn a water wheel attached to a [grain or wood] mill—by straightening the creek and reinforcing its banks with cut timbers.
