Location: Tree Line along West Street near Sigma Theta Tau (TG)

A historical marker was placed in recognition of James Overall.

Overall, a free African American, bought land near this site in 1832 after moving to Indianapolis with his family. A leader in the community and the AME Church, he was well known for his aid efforts towards escaping slaves.

In March 1836, a gang of white men tried to break into Overall's home and threatened him and his family; Overall defended his property and family by shooting one of the men. At a time when blacks held limited legal rights and were barred from testifying against whites in court, Overall sought legal protection from future attacks with the help of white allies. Judge William W. Wick "affirmed Overall's 'natural rights' to defend his family and his property".
