Type: Metal Historical Sign on Signpost
Erected by: Indiana Historical Bureau and the Ladies Auxiliary Group & Members of St. Stephen Church
Installation Date: 1995
Location: Northeast Lawn of Eskenazi Hall (HR) along Blackford Street
The historical marker was placed to mark the original site of the St. Stephan Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
The church was founded, in 1915, by Macedonian and Bulgarian immigrants. These new residents of Indianapolis were seeking a place to fulfill their religious needs and to establish a community in which they could enjoy the traditions and customs of their Slavonic heritage.
The church was relocated in 1955 to N. Medford Avenue.
