  1. Campus Highlights

    Stops

    1. Colony Hall

Welcome to Colony Hall, where the entire Choate community can gather to reflect and celebrate! With its spacious recital hall, dance studio, and ample practice rooms, you’ll embrace artistic expression like never before. The 1,000-seat auditorium serves as the venue for the weekly all-school meeting, where you’re kept up-to-date about what’s happening in the Choate community. It’s also a performance hall, built specifically to enhance both spoken word performances and amplified music, making it the perfect place for plays, musicals, and symphonies.

Up the stairs, you’ll find the dance studio, filled with natural light and surrounded by gorgeous views of the campus. Whether you’re new to the performing arts or you've been performing for years, you’ll have the space and support to refine your skills, learn new techniques, and work closely with our faculty to bring your talents into the spotlight.

    2. Paul Mellon Arts Center

If you love the arts, you’ll fit right in at the Paul Mellon Arts Center. Home to the Arts Concentration signature program, your dance concert, play, musical, or artwork exhibition will blossom here. Whether you want to direct your own performance or take advantage of the art studios—designed with natural light to enhance your painting, drawing, or mixed media projects—this space lets you work closely with faculty and other students to explore, create, and appreciate new ranges of artistic expression.

The 770-seat  theater is accompanied by its own scene shop, costume shop, and Green Room. You’ll also get to explore the smaller Chase-Bear Experimental Theater, also called the “Black Box,” which serves as an underground link between the main stage on the west side of the building and the gallery on the east side.

    3. Great Lawn

The Great Lawn is where it all begins: at Opening Days, you’ll celebrate here, meeting your classmates, dancing, playing games, and getting to see all of what Choate has to offer as an incoming student. The Lawn serves as your path to the Paul Mellon Arts Center, Colony Hall, the Science Center, and Information Technology Services, all located on the Upper Campus. And when your career at Choate comes to an end, you’ll march proudly across the Great Lawn once more at Commencement, and visit your classmates here at Reunion. But that’s still in your future. For now, this lush epicenter is the perfect place for a stroll (or, when the snow comes, building a snowman with your friends!).
    4. Carl C. Icahn Center for Science

Tucked against the pond and ringed by trees, the Carl C. Icahn Center for Science presents opportunities for learning inside and out. Stepping through the doors, you’ll find a designated floor for each discipline: physics, biology, and chemistry. In the fall, students from our signature Science Research Program give presentations of their academic research at a university laboratory and display their research boards along the wall of the buildings. No matter where your interests lie, you’ll be surrounded by the ideas and enthusiasm of new friends who share your excitement. With 22 classrooms and laboratories, a large and comfortable reference/study area, and the 150-seat Getz Auditorium for classes and presentations, there’s plenty of room to explore.

In the spring, you’ll move outside for a truly immersive learning experience. Get ready for the Physics Phlotilla in May, where students design and build a boat to race across the pond—using only two double-mattress cartons and two rolls of masking tape! Recent classes have also participated in a catch-and-release program for birds on campus, learning more about our local ecosystems and wildlife through hands-on learning. No matter the season, we’re excited to see you dive in and explore the science of the world around you.

    5. Lanphier Center for Mathematics and Computer Science

If you can dream it, you can build it here at the LEED-Gold certified Lanphier Center for Mathematics and Computer Science, home to the signature Advanced Robotics Concentration program (ARC). So much more than a traditional classroom space, you’ll find everything you need to bring your projects to the next level and discover new avenues of learning. Build a machine of your own design in our robotics lab, or bring your inventions to life in the i.d.Lab, where you can learn anything from circuitry to soldering, 3D printing to virtual reality. (Plus, stop in and see if Pancake Bot is serving up breakfast!).

Need a break? Visit the Lanphier Café for a snack or drink between classes, or relax in one of the adjoining study rooms. Whether you’re sitting with friends or working on your next project, Lanphier is a collaborative, interactive space where you can work, unwind, and socialize, all under one roof.

    6. Memorial Circle

As you get to know the campus, you’ll understand why Memorial Circle (or "Mem") is such a popular spot. A haven for student life and play, it’s often used for dorm sporting events, student activities and games, and the annual inter-dorm President’s Cup Softball Tournament. You can join your friends on the lawn playing football, Frisbee, or softball, or just relaxing in the shade of the surrounding trees and enjoying the bustle of campus life.

Part of what makes Mem Circle so active is its proximity to many Choate dorms. Getting to live and visit dorms is an exciting part of boarding school life, and it’s the unique blend of living spaces that helps define the Choate experience. We have a wide selection of dorms, from small houses to large dormitory complexes, singles to doubles, and a dorm for all-gender housing. Attend a “mug night” (snacks for all!), meet your prefects, and make new friends—all exciting parts of dorm living.

    7. Paul Mellon Humanities Center

Young writers, debaters, and economics enthusiasts will feel right at home here in the Paul Mellon Humanities Center. You’ll share classroom space with the English and History, Philosophy, Religion & Social Sciences Departments, ensuring that both thought-provoking conversation and help with assignments are at your disposal. The walls themselves are decorated with philosophical quotations sure to inspire you over the course of your day.

Don’t skip out after class! The Humanities Center is also home to Choate’s award-winning debate and economics teams, our signature John F. Kennedy ‘35 Program in Government and Public Service, and the Rosenthal Digital Video Studio, where you can learn more about recording, editing, and finalizing your video projects. Come explore and utilize all the tools you need to bring your vision to life.

    8. Carrington House

Carrington House is home to Choate Summer Programs. Each summer Choate welcomes over 500 middle and upper school students to campus for summer exploration of academic enrichment, the arts and athletics
    9. Andrew Mellon Library

    10. Steele Hall

Steele Hall is where you’ll find the best resources for your language classes. We offer seven languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish, Greek, and Italian. Stop by the Language Media Lab to utilize our 32-station language laboratory, or meet with one of our tutors when you need a bit of clarity. This is also where you’ll find information for the signature AMES (Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies) Program and our Term Abroad Programs. And for all your classroom printing needs, stop in and visit the Print and Document Services Center!
    11. Hill House

Reopened in 2021, the new construction features a welcoming entrance and common room, restored office space for College Counseling, renovated dormitories, and gathering spaces for all members of the Choate community. This multipurpose space allows faculty, staff, and students new spaces to unwind or get work done. Hill House is also the home to the dining hall, offering meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Stern Architects, is home to the honors and interdisciplinary Environmental Immersion Program (EIP), a year-long residential academic experience, and Choate’s Sustainable Food Project.
