    1. St Vibiana's Cathedral

Vibiana, the formal Cathedral of St Vibiana, is one of Los Angeles' few remaining nineteenth century landmarks and was completed in 1876 and like many of the city's iconic buildings, St. Vibiana's 19th century cathedral in downtown L.A. is hidden in plain view. The Cathedral of Santa Vibiana, is modeled after the architecture of Puerto de San Miguel in Barcelona. Opened in 1876, it became the home of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and it replaced Iglesia Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles as the city's main Roman Catholic church. Pope Pius IX named St Vibiana's for a third century martyr. With the help of its 83-foot bell tower, the Spanish-Baroque church instantly became a dominant part of the city's skyline. Deemed unsafe after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, it was nearly demolished until a passionate group of preservationists stepped in to save it.
