The Beverly Hills City Hall has gracefully presided over the city's civic life since 1932. Architect William Gage created the Spanish Renaissance building in typical government style of that era. The low classical base, which symbolizes government, is dominated by an eight-story tower, which represents commerce. But the beauty of the building, with its tiled dome and gilded cupola, soon transcended the typical government building and has become a beloved local landmark. The building was renovated in 1982, increasing office space from 49,000 to 67,000 SF and bringing the building up to code. The rich architectural details: the terrazzo floors, marble walls, intricate ceilings and the blue, green and gold tile on the dome and gilded cupola were carefully restored and maintained. Later, the main entrance to City Hall was relocated and the ground-floor reception area was remodeled in 2008. While the City Hall was under renovation, the architecture was used by architect Charles Moore and the Urban Innovations Group as the inspiration for the Beverly Hills Civic Center; completed in 1990. Moore's team won the commission in a 1982 competition whose field included Frank Gehry. The program included housing the Beverly Hills Police Department, which had been located inside City Hall since 1932. The Beverly Hills Civic Center is a major example of the Post-Modern style; playfully joining City Hall's Spanish Renaissance architecture with a clear art deco influence reflective of classic cinematic glamour. Curved colonnades frame the approaches to the renovated and expanded City Hall, library and police and fire departments, creating a public space that is both mysterious and welcoming. Lush gardens of palm trees, numerous balconies and stairways create a unique sense of place. Colorful tile echoes City Hall's tiled dome. A series of elliptical courtyards connect the city's buildings across Rexford Drive.
